New “All About Me” summer camp experience designed for children 3-6

June 12, 2014

SHAKER HEIGHTS – The Reinberger Parent/Child Resource Center at Hanna Perkins Center has announced “All About Me,” a new summer camp experience for children ages 3-6, kicking off this July.

Drawing on a fun curriculum including arts & crafts, science, music and literacy activities, and healthy cooking/eating, “All About Me” is designed to focus on the healthy emergence of self-esteem – a critical developmental step for children in this age group. As a final project, each child will make a book about him/herself to take home.

The camp experience is held twice a week – every Tuesday and Thursday – from 9:30 to noon for six weeks, beginning July 8 and ending Aug. 14. Enrollment costs just $100 for the entire program, and can also be purchased on a week-to-week basis for $20 a week.

“Everything about this new program has been mindfully assembled to help children at a specific developmental stage to form a strong and constructive sense of self,” said Pam Millar, Associate Director of Community Engagement & School Programs at Hanna Perkins. “When children go into preschool and kindergarten with healthy self-esteem, they tend to get along well with others and possess the self-discipline that structured learning requires. So while this camp experience is about fun, it’s also about preparing children to flourish in the years of school that lie ahead.”

Noreen Acierno, a longtime preschool teacher at Hanna Perkins School, will run the program with Millar.

Millar says the two-and-a-half hour length of each session – including a snack – is just right for young children. And with parents remaining onsite but out of the room, the program offers an important bridge to the often difficult separation process as children begin going to school. A comfortable lounge with Wi-Fi is available to parents.

Hanna Perkins is now accepting enrollment for the summer’s “All About Me” experience. More information is available at www.hannaperkins.org/all-about-me, or by calling 216-991-4472.

About Hanna Perkins

Since 1951, The Hanna Perkins Center for Child Development has served children and families across Northeast Ohio. Its work is founded on knowledge that a child’s behavior is a means of communicating important feelings and emotions that he or she may not yet have the ability to put into words.

Located in the historic renovation of the former Malvern School in Shaker Heights, Hanna Perkins provides these services:

Hanna Perkins School, offering preschool, a state-chartered kindergarten, and parent/toddler classes. The school focuses on emotional intelligence – the ability to understand and manage feelings – which is regarded as a building block for other success skills.

Continuing education and training to teachers, day care providers, social workers and other child-care specialists across Northeast Ohio.

Hadden Clinic for Children & Families, providing developmental guidance and therapy for children and adolescents, including the specialized technique of Treatment Via the Parent.

The Reinberger Parent Child Resource Center, offering drop-in play for young children and their parents/caregivers, and educational opportunities based on the Hanna Perkins approach to child development.

Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Training, through an intensive program that prepares professionals to provide psychoanalytic therapy to children and adolescents, and to work closely with children’s parents.
