Creating an Emotionally Safe Preschool Classroom: Responsibility, Respect, and Relationships

Participants will review and discuss the importance of having a safe and respectful classroom for preschool children. Participants will have time to prepare a group presentation, sharing their ideal “safe” classroom, which includes room arrangement, classroom rules, and daily activities to implement, that encourage respect, children taking on responsibilities and developing relationships with peers and adults.

Objectives

Participants will become aware, discuss and understand the benefits of providing a safe environment for preschool. Participants will understand the importance of providing a safe environement, and the difference it makes to their classroom and children’s behaviors.

Participants will review the ways to create an emotionally safe classroom, discuss in detail. The will understand the many ways to support an emotionally safe classrom, identify three to focus on, and be able to share examples of how they use these ideas in their classroom during group discussion.

Participants will create a physical set up for an emotionally safe classroom, create realistic rules. Participants will discuss the meaning of active supervision during the daily routines, giving examples.

Participants will create lesson plans demonstrating their understanding of implementing activities that encourage respect, increase student responsibility, encourage positive interaction, and model empathy in their classroom routines.
