Working Through Ethical Dilemmas in the Early Childhood Profession

Participants will discuss and learn why it is important to have professional ethics, a code of conduct and the responsibilities they include. Participants will review and discuss the NAEYC Ethical Code of Conduct (2011). Participants are expected to participate in group discussions, problem solving and final presentation.

Objectives

Participants will understand the importance of having a code of ethics. participants will learn the importance of being professional in relationships with children and families and co-workers.

  • Competency: 1.2 Discusses the reason for the code of ethics or recognizes the underlying core values. Recognizes and values early childhood and avoids participating in any practices that are disrespectful or potentially harmful to children.
EC Professionals will have a deeper understanding of: What an Early Childhood Professional does; the code of conduct; their ethical responsibilities to themselves, the families, children and community. Group discussion will include how we model professional interaction with families and co-workers.

  • Competency: 3.1 Consistently models and informs others of standards and principles set forth in the code of ethics.
Participants will learn how to approach dilemmas, steps to review before making respectful decisions for all involved. Group activity and presentation includes disussing dilemmas, coming to an agreement, and making a decision  that is supportive to all involved in the scenario.
